Chapter 2: Electrochemistry (CBSE Class 12)

  • Electrochemistry is the study and production of electricity from energy released during spontaneous chemical reactions and using electrical energy to bring about non-spontaneous chemical transformations.
  • The device which converts the chemical energy liberated during the chemical reaction to electrical energy is called an electrochemical cell. They are also called galvanic or voltaic cell. Daniell cell is an example of a voltaic cell.
  • The cell which converts chemical energy liberated during the redox reaction to electrical energy is called Daniell Cell.
  • Electrolytic Cell: It is a device which converts electrical energy into chemical energy.
