Chapter 5: Coordinate Compounds (CBSE Class 12)

  • One of the characteristics of transition metals is their ability to form complexes or coordination compounds.
  • Coordination compounds are the compounds in which the central metal atom is linked to a number of ions or neutral molecules by coordinate bonds, i.e., by donation of a lone pair of electrons by these ions or neutral molecules to the central metal atom.
  • Chlorophyll, haemoglobin and vitamin B-12 are coordination compounds of magnesium, iron and cobalt respectively.
